How To: Hackintosh a Dell Mini 9 Into the Ultimate OS X Netbook

I am typing this on a 9-inch, 3G-equipped, almost-pocketable computer, running the best consumer OS money can currently buy. It costs around $400. Do you want one too? Here's how to get yours.

There are a lot of netbooks on which you can install and run OS X, but if you're mindful of the handy comparison chart those lads at Boing Boing Gadgets have compiled, you'll know that the Mini 9 is about as ideal a platform as you'll find for a Hackintosh ultraportable: Everything from wi-fi, sound and the function keys down to the optional integrated mobile broadband card and the SD card reader are supported and work as they should. No hardware compromises at all. It's awesome.

Generally, there are two ways to approach a Hackintosh install: Using a "slipstreamed" OS X installer image that's been modified to install on non-Apple hardware, or using a $129 factory-fresh retail OS X install disk in tandem with a special bootloader that does the necessary tweaking to let the install happen. The former can be easy enough, but it's pretty much illegal since it contains a pirated OS X install disk, and on top of that you'll run into all kinds of problems should you ever want to upgrade your OS or software via Software Update.

By using a retail OS X disk, you stay mostly out of pirate waters, and ensure that once everything's up and running, you'll be as close as is possible to having an actual Mac. Here we're doing that, using a method referred to as the "Type11" install, cooked up by a fellow of the same handle and his colleagues over on the MyDellMini forums, a fantastic resource.

Even though we're using a standard retail-purchased copy of OS X, the disclaimer: Apple does not like Hackintoshing. It violates the OS X EULA, and probably won't make the Dell folks too happy either, should you need to return your hacked Mini 9 for service. So, as always, proceed at your own risk.

Who doesn’t like robots? We’ll tell you who: the devil. And not that cool devil you hear about from rock stars. The devil who makes you do your homework and won’t give you ice cream.

We’ve had some time to play with the Innovation First VEXplorer RC Robotic Construction System, and we have to say that we’re saddened by how Innovation ignored everything we know about robots thanks to movies and television. Here’s a list of everything the Innovation First VEXplorer RC Robotic Construction System gets wrong.

1) NO ASIMOV RULES. When you’re dealing with a living creature with tools like “The Claw” and “The Arm”, you have to assume that at some point, it is going to want to kill everyone. So the first thing we did after we got the Innovation First VEXplorer RC Robotic Construction System out of the box is try to murder the postman. It didn’t work, because the postman was a former Marine who apparently has six black belts, but that’s not the point. The point is, it COULD have worked, and that’s the kind of danger humanity can’t afford. What if we’d used one of those rays that makes robots grow to hundreds of feet tall? Then what could have stopped us? Innovation, keep this in mind for next time, okay?

2) THE ROBOT DOESN’T WANT TO BE HUMAN. It takes about an hour to build your first Innovation First VEXplorer RC Robot, and in that whole time, not once did we hear “Humans are most fascinating” or “My superior All Terrain Tires are nothing compared to the concept of love, which I cannot understand even a little bit even though I have memorized every word ever written on the subject”. That’s a huge mistake. Without the pre-programed desire to be human, how can we feel superior? Half the fun of having a robot is looking right into that 150 foot range Spycam and laughing at how much better you are and always will be. Don’t keep bragging about how the VEXplorer is used in robotics classes ranging from junior high schools to Carnegie Mellon University. Teach this thing it will never be good enough no matter how hard it tries.

3) THE ROBOT HAS NO LASERS. This one is pretty straight forward. We’re not gonna be that hard on you here, Innovation, because we know lasers cost money, but at least give us a sticker that says “Laser Goes Here”. Or “Laser Doesn’t Go Here” if you’re worried about lawsuits. With over 300 parts, how are we supposed to know where to put the aftermarket laser? And by aftermarket, we mean please don’t tell anyone that we stole an industrial strength laser. We hid it under the giant Ken Jennings head. Shhh.

Except for those glaringly obvious details, the Innovation First VEXplorer RC Robotic Construction System is a pretty cool way to make a robot that you can then drive around using the six channel hobby-class transmitter. But honestly, Innovation, don’t act like you really understand what robots are until you do a little more homework. Maybe watch a few hours of this for next time. Okay? Okay.

1. Potential Obama Appointees Questioned on Guns

The National Rifle Association has denounced the Barack Obama transition team’s questionnaire asking potential appointees about their own gun ownership.

The 63-question personnel form includes this query: “Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”

Paul Light, professor of public service at New York University, told Politico.com that there was no such question for potential appointees when George W. Bush took office in 2000.

“It kind of sticks out there like a sore thumb,” he said.

Light hypothesized that the Obama camp might want to avoid the spectacle of a Cabinet-level or other high-ranking appointee who is found to have an unregistered handgun.

But the NRA, which spent millions in an attempt to defeat Obama, is crying foul over the question.

“Barack Obama and his administration are showing their true colors and true philosophy with regard to the Second Amendment,” said Chris Cox, the NRA’s top political official.

“It shows what we’ve been saying all along this guy doesn’t view the Second Amendment as a fundamental constitutional right.”

Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina also denounced the question.

“It’s very odd and very concerning to put out a question like that,” he said.

DeMint’s campaign organization sent an e-mail to supporters vowing to endorse legislation that bars federal hiring discrimination on the basis of gun ownership.

The question put to potential appointees is just the latest Obama move to irk opponents of gun control, NewsBusters contributing editor Tom Blumer pointed out.

Among other things, Obama has voted to allow lawsuits designed to bankrupt firearms firms, voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting, endorsed a complete ban on handgun ownership, voted to uphold local gun bans and the criminal prosecution of people who use firearms in self-defense, and supported a proposal to ban gun stores within five miles of a school or park.

How to Burn Any Video File to a Playable Video DVD

With your BitTorrent addiction in full swing, you've filled hard drives with media but can't seem to figure out how to burn any of the videos you downloaded to a DVD. Sound familiar? It's a common problem, and there was a time that it didn't have many simple (or free) solutions. Luckily that's no longer the case, and today we're taking a look at two dead simple solutions for burning virtually any video to a DVD you can pop into your DVD player and enjoy.

DVD Flick

First and foremost, there's DVD Flick, a free, open-source application that supports over 45 different file formats, includes subtitle support, and makes creating a DVD from most common (and even uncommon) video files a breeze. I detailed how to burn almost any video file to a playable DVD with DVD Flick almost two years ago now, but the app is better than ever. Since I last wrote it up, DVD Flick has added support for creating custom menu screens and has pushed out a load of bug fixes.

Free DVD Creator

If DVD Flick isn't your thing, then check out Free DVD Creator. It's not open source like DVD Flick (we do love our FOSS), but it's still free, and it offers most of the same features as DVD Flick.

Also like DVD Flick, the Free DVD Creator wizard is dead simple to use. First select the movies you want to burn and arrange them in the order you'd like them to playback and appear on the DVD menu. On the next screen, you can completely customize your DVD menu screen. Once you've made it that far, just start burning. Free DVD Creator (like DVD Flick) will handle all of the file conversions necessary, then write the DVD-ready video to a DVD complete with your custom menu.

If you have trouble with the one step convert-and-burn (when I tested it, Free DVD Creator created the DVD but didn't immediately burn), just re-open Free DVD Creator and this time select Video DVD Burner instead of Create Video DVD. Then just point the Burner at the VIDEO_TS folder that Free DVD Creator made the first time around (by default it's located atC:\DVDTemp\ and hit Burn. That worked for me without a hitch.

NEW YORK — What do you do when you’ve bolted a computer onto a remote-controlled car, hooked it up with Internet access, a wireless router and a camera but you don’t have anyone to show it off to?

Just ask Mike Davis. He took his mobile Internet access point to a meeting with other readers of Make magazine, a how-to publication for people who justlove to tinker with stuff.

The 28-year-old systems engineer from Brooklyn found people who built homemade LCD displays, a clock that makes you solve a math problem before setting the alarm and a class in mastering pipe mechanics - something with many uses beyond just making a potato cannon. A number of people make those, by the way.

Make magazine, not yet 3 years old, is leading a new waveof interest in build-it-yourself projects. Even as technology comes to us in packages that are ever harder to take apart and tinker with, Make harkens back to a time when it was OK to build your own radio, get under the hood of your car and open up electronic devices like record players just to see how they worked. Its Web site sells hooded sweat shirts emblazoned with the credo: “If You Can’tOpen It, You Don’t Own It.”

People seem to be catching on. In the summer of 2005, not long after Make’s first issue came out, an MIT-educated engineer named Eric Wilhelm launched a site called Instructables.com with howto instructions for all kinds of projects, while a meet-up group called Dorkbot has been springing up in cities around the country to showcase artistic, musical and just plain quizzical inventions with one thing in common - using electricity.

Make is about to gain an even bigger national audience. A Make-themed TV show is set to air on public TV stations around the country early next year, and on May 3-4 the magazine is hosting its third “Maker Faire,” a contraptions bonanza that drew 40,000 people last year, double the amount of its first year.

Richard Hudson, executive producer of science programming at TPT/Twin Cities Public Television, the PBS station in Minneapolis that is making the show, says he hopes that the new Make:TV show will do for the build-it-yourself project what Julia Child did for cooking and This Old House did for home improvement. The show is being sponsored by Geek Squad, the technology services business owned by Best Buy Co.

“The real magic of the magazine is giving you permission and the instructions to take control of technology, to do what you want with it,” Hudson said. “In the world of making, you get to turn technology to your will, and that’s a breakthrough.”

The magazine, part of a Sebastopol, Calif.-based technical publishing company called O’Reilly Media Inc., traces its origins to 2003. Dale Dougherty, a longtime editor of technical manuals, suggested “a Martha Stewart for geeks” to Chief Executive Officer Tim O’Reilly. Its paid circulation is now 100,000, and back issues sell briskly on its Web site, makezine.com.

Dougherty says the whole Make franchise is close to being profitable.

Make isn’t about products per se, but recipes for making stuff. Some projects are practical, like a battery charger for an MP3 player, affectionately called a “Minty Boost” after the tin of Altoids mints that is adapted to hold a pair of AA batteries (not included). Other projects are more involved, like using a length of wood and a cigar box to build an electric guitar.

Make has built credibility among the geek elite, thanks partly to Editor in Chief Mark Frauenfelder, co-founder the Web site BoingBoing.net. A compendium of wacky finds from the worlds of technologyand pop culture, a recent photo posted there featured a “Giant sculpture of woman made from peaches.”

Google Inc., another bastion of tech-coolness, has been a sponsor of Maker Faire and sent representatives there to promote a 3-D modeling and design program called SketchUp, which turns out to be very popular among readers of Make.

“We felt like we were among friends,” said John Bacus, product manager for SketchUp.

Make also goes on field trips to explore what other like-minded contraption creators are doing. Dougherty and contributing editor Bill Gurstelle, a former engineer for AT&T Inc., have visited the Punkin Chunkin World Championships in Delaware, a contest for makers of huge devices designed to hurl pumpkins great distances.

Gurstelle is no slouch in that department. He’s authored a number of books including Backyard Ballistics and WhooshBoom Splat: The Garage Warrior’s Guide to Building Projectile Shooters.

Gurstelle, who describes what he does as “PG-13 science projects,” compares Make with what Popular Science magazine was 25 years ago, full of projects made for people “who like to take control of the gadgets and gizmos around them.”

Wilhelm started an early version of the Instructables site while still a starving grad student because he was seeking advice about how to make equipment to support his kitesurfing hobby on the cheap.

The site is now nearly profitable and is seeing online traffic grow about 10 percent a month, hitting 2.5 million unique visitors in January, he said. One of the most popular projects is the “Invisible Book Shelf,” made by attaching an L-bracket to a book which you then attach to your wall, and then pile more books on top.

Dorkbot, an amateur meet-upgroup for technology tinkerers, has been thriving as well. Started in 2000 by Douglas Repetto, director of research at the Computer Music Center at Columbia University, the group has regular meetings in New York and another dozen cities for people to display various electronics projects both artistic and functional. The group proclaims on its Dorkbot.org Web site that it’s all about “People doing strange things with electricity.”

That certainly applies to Mike Davis, who made the mobile computer.

Davis had spent plenty of time exchanging ideas with other hobbyists online, but he said there was no substitute for going someplace in person and seeing projects firsthand.

“I had a fairly brisk online social life for a while with a lot of geeky people, but it’s not as tangible as in real life,” Davis said. “Bringing the car and having people poke at it, it just seems more real.”

Engadget has just gotten out of a meeting with Thomas Eriksson, co-founder and CTO of Neonode, and learned some very exciting information about the company's newest, as-yet-unannounced phones. We were shown designs of the mobile-maker's next lineup of devices, including an iPhone-esque model called "Earth" which has been confirmed for production (though Thomas insisted that some features and design would change, of course). The phone will feature a 2.9-inch, true 16:9 ratio infrared touchscreen (an updated version of the Neonode N2's touch surface), HSPA connectivity, and will operate on five separate frequency bands (a first as far as we can tell), allowing 3G use in both Europe and the US. However, the most interesting thing that we were shown was a live prototype of the company's latest OS, which blows the doors off of previous iterations. The new interface is a much more robust platform, featuring a homescreen made up of a number of small widget-like icons, all updating live with things like RSS feeds, phone logs, weather, and mail. The UI is still meant to be operated via one hand, though Thomas confirmed that the device would sport a virtual QWERTY keyboard, and would deliver more PIM / smartphone features than we've seen from them in the past. The design of the interface is still being tweaked, but it looks very contemporary to current and future phone OSs we've been seeing, with lots of nice shading and alpha layers. From the little we peeped, this platform could be a contender if handled correctly -- Thomas told us that Neonode had plans underway to partner with carriers in the US, so stay tuned to this space for more info.

I have sent them numerous emails asking about this and yet to receive any information
